HVAC Troubleshooting — What Your System Is Trying to Tell You
Half of HVAC repair is knowing what the symptoms mean. Short-cycling furnaces, freezing AC coils, kettling boilers, and rooms that never warm up all have real, findable causes — and Parker Boiler & HVAC troubleshoots them with instruments and experience rather than guesswork and part-swapping.
Below are the questions we hear every week, answered straight. When you need eyes on the actual equipment, call 303-944-3704.
Furnace symptoms decoded
Runs a few minutes then shuts off: the limit switch is tripping from restricted airflow or a failing blower — fix the airflow, not just the switch. Blows cold air: ignition failure or a flame sensor that needs cleaning. Loud at startup: delayed ignition or a worn blower bearing. Each symptom points to a specific set of causes, and we test rather than guess.
AC symptoms decoded
Running but not cooling: capacitor, refrigerant, coil, or compressor issues — diagnosed in order of probability and verified with gauges, not vibes. Freezing up: airflow or charge problems that will destroy the compressor if ignored. High bills with weak cooling: usually a slowly failing system or duct leakage we can measure.
Boiler symptoms decoded
Kettling and banging: scale buildup or trapped air in the loops. One cold zone: a stuck zone valve or failed circulator — the two parts we stock most. Pressure keeps dropping: a leak somewhere in the system, which we trace and fix rather than just repressurizing monthly.
When troubleshooting needs a tech
DIY has its place — check your filter, your breakers, and your thermostat batteries first. But refrigerant, combustion, gas, and pressurized hydronic systems are not DIY territory, and misdiagnosis costs more than the service call. When the simple checks don't solve it, our licensed techs will find the real cause.

Questions we hear every week
Why does my furnace run for a few minutes and shut off?
Usually restricted airflow — a clogged filter, blocked returns, or a failing blower — tripping the limit switch. Sometimes it's a flame sensor or a control fault. We diagnose the cause instead of resetting the switch.
Why does my AC freeze into a block of ice?
Low airflow from a dirty filter or blocked coils, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failed blower. Turn it off and let it thaw, then call us — running a frozen unit damages the compressor.
Why is my boiler making banging or kettling noises?
Usually air in the system or scale on the heat exchanger — sometimes a circulator or zone valve problem. Kettling shouldn't be ignored; it signals conditions that shorten a boiler's life.
Why is one room always cold while the rest are fine?
Commonly duct leaks, unbalanced dampers, undersized returns, or a zone valve serving that part of the system. Sometimes it's simple: the thermostat for that zone needs attention.
